The actor couldn’t stop thinking about his own mortality when his on-screen alter-ego Officer Eckhart faced several life or death situations on the big screen.

“The majority of the film I’m in the back of an armored car lying, dying, wailing, crying, thinking about my own morality. He’s a mess, but this is the worst where I’m at. Dirty, bloody and half-way dead. My character Officer Eckhart responds to a siren. When getting to the location, he thinks he hears the siren and the siren goes off. He gets himself shot when he does his job and pulls his weapon. He gets a shotgun blast to the gut.”

Despite the gory storyline, the 32-year-old actor admits there were many things which drew him to the movie. He explained, “First of all, the actors. To be able to work with Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno, Skeet Ulrich, Amaury Nolasco and Columbus Short, that was an initial draw of course. Then the story to tell. This kind of hopeful youth going against the desperation of guys that are kind of at the end of their rope. There’s a story to tell there. I think ultimately I’m never going to jump into anything that I don’t think there is a story to tell or a character arc to understand, so for me it was just being a part of that.”

On TV, Heroes’ Peter Petrelli absorbs whatever super power he needs to save the day. In Armored, he’s only got human strength and wits to stop an armored truck heist. We met with him on the set, emerging from the overturned truck covered in movie blood and bruises, to find out what trouble he’s into this time.

Milo Ventimiglia Armored Set Visit Interview

How did your character get into this current state?
Milo Ventimiglia: “You mean dirty, bloody and half-way dead? My character Officer Eckhart responds to a siren. When getting to the location, he thinks he hears the siren and the siren goes off. He gets himself shot when he does his job and pulls his weapon. He gets a shotgun blast to the gut.”

You have a fairly leading role in the film, is your character in this state the whole time?
Milo Ventimiglia: “Quite a bit. The majority of the film I’m in the back of an armored car laying, dying, wailing, crying, thinking about my own morality. He’s a mess, but this is the worst where I’m at.”

Is there extra stuff seeping from the fake bullet holes?
Milo Ventimiglia: “Oh yeah. There’s actually tubes connected to this that run down. Some of the scenes on the truck they’re pumping a lot of blood in me. This is all very dry right now. But it’s pretty wet and pretty sticky and pretty messy.”

So this is kind of your homage in Tim Roth in Reservoir Dogs?
Milo Ventimiglia: “I intentionally didn’t watch that because he was so genius in that role. It’s kind of hard to be there and witness somebody getting shot in the gut and do an honest interpretation of it. I think for me it was just understanding more the mental pain and disconnect from the physical of what you go through if you know you’re going to die, which is pretty painful and pretty tiring too.”

What was it about this project that you liked?
Milo Ventimiglia: “First of all, the actors.

How long does it take you to get into wardrobe and makeup?
Milo Ventimiglia: “Makeup is about an hour and wardrobe is about 15-20 minutes. If I were to take these pants off and just stand them here, they would stand on their own. They’re saturated in blood and dirt and sh-t. Not sh-t, stuff. There’s all kinds of junk in here that allows them to have a life of their own.”

Are you wearing an authentic vest?
Milo Ventimiglia: “It’s pretty thick. It’s pretty heavy, but I think adding the full gun belt and all of that stuff, it has the authenticity and feel of what these guys go through. I mean understanding that you’ve got your vest strapped to your chest and it’s going to save your life, hopefully. It’s easy when you walk around and feel like if I get shot I’ll be okay, but people also would target you to get shot. By being sheriff you put yourself in that position. I don’t know. There’s a psychology to putting on as much of the real thing as you can.”

This movie seems pretty action-intense. Does it compare to Heroes?
Milo Ventimiglia: “Yeah. We were on the Sony lot and I was walking around and I had a huge opening on my hip and side. Some guy said to me, ‘Oh you guys are shooting over here?’ I go, ‘Yeah. No, no! A different job.’ He’s like, ‘Oh, you’re not back on Heroes.’ I’m like, ‘No, no no.’ It’s the same and I treat it the same. We do a lot of stunts. There is a lot of blood on Heroes and I’m pretty comfortable with it.”

Since your character is in the back of the armored truck a lot of the time, does he befriend any of the bad guys or does he get a better understanding of why they’re doing what they are?
Milo Ventimiglia: “He does get a better sense of what they’re going through, through Columbus Short’s character. But I think ultimately Eckhart is on the opposite end of the law. Like, ‘You don’t do this. You don’t break the law. You don’t shoot people. You don’t do any of that stuff.’ So there’s never going to be a full understanding. But when it comes to a perceived bad guy possibly trying to save the life of the good guy, there’s got to be some unspoken camaraderie, regardless of being on opposite sides.”

Can you talk about working with the director Nimrod Antal?
Milo Ventimiglia: “Nimrod is great, man. He and I didn’t get a chance to meet until two days before I started so we dove in. I see what he does with the camera. I see the way that he speaks to the actors and it’s very effortless. He’s incredibly talented and encouraging with what his vision is and giving that to all of us. I’ve never felt in the dark, which is great.”

Another trailer for “Armored” has been put forth by Screen Gems. Debuted via Apple, this new sneak peek offers many similar footage to the first one. There are slight differences between the two trailers, though, with different dialog and music cues. Most of never-before-seen footage can be seen nearing the end of this new two minutes video preview.

This heist thriller tells the story of a crew of officers at an armored transport security firm who plans an ultimate heist against their own company. Armed with a seemingly fool-proof plan, the men plan on making a fortune with harm to none. But when an unexpected witness interferes, the plan quickly unravels and hell breaks loose.

“Armored” stars Columbus Short, Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno, Skeet Ulrich, Amaury Nolasco, Fred Ward and Milo Ventimiglia. Directed by Nimrod Antal using the script written by James V. Simpson, it is set to raid the theaters across the U.S. on September 18.

Fangoria’s Comic Screams Interview with Milo Ventimiglia
Thursday, 16 July 2009

In Part 2 of our Exclusive look at Top Cow’s Berserker (read part one, an interview with writer Rick Loverd here), Fangoria’s Mike Fish sits down with star Milo Ventimiglia aka Heroes’ Peter Petrelli.

Based on a script for a television pilot deemed “too violent” for the small screen by Hollywood, Ventimiglia gives Fango his take on how the project came to be, and discusses his relationship with the horror genre.

A Fangoria Comic Screams Interview with: Milo Ventimiglia

Comic Book: Berserker Top Cow Comics

Fangoria: Welcome to the land that lives and breathes horror, Mr. Ventimiglia!

Milo Ventimiglia: Thanks for having me…let’s cut me in half. Let people really see what’s inside.

Fangoria: Can we persuade you to stop saving the cheerleader and start saving other things like…

Milo Ventimiglia: …swamp monsters that have axe wounds on their faces? What can I save at the moment?

Fangoria: As most Monday night fans and even a certain True Blood vampire know, you play Peter Petrelli on NBC’s hit show, HEROES. How has that experience been for you?

Milo Ventimiglia: It’s been a good one. Pretty rewarding thus far. I get to work with a great group of performers and pretend to be a true bad ass when truly, all I want to do is read comics with my big friend Russ.

Fangoria: Do you think Heroes has any gas left in the tank with all the trouble that’s been going on in the writing and characterization departments?

Milo Ventimiglia: I hope it has a reserve tank loaded and ready. Already 3 episodes into the 4th season, I can tell you that it feels like the first season. I do know we’re all working pretty hard to bring the show back to its original glory.

Fangoria: Speaking of characters, this Berserker guy, Farris Jorn, looks pretty insane… and kind of like you on steroids. (Well, in cover artist Dale Keown’s interpretation anyway.) How did you get involved in this comic book?

Milo Ventimiglia: I think he looks like Ryan Reynolds on a normal day, but thank you for the compliment. Russ Cundiff (my partner at Divide) and I had this tv pilot script by Rick Loverd called “Berserker” and we knew no one was going to make it, cause of all the blood and such, so we went to our friends at Top Cow, said you guys are a company that doesn’t hold back, how bout we do this together? That was the start.

Fangoria: The male characters in Berserker seem to be genuinely nice guys that have a dark side in them. Do you relate to Farris and feel you have a dark side? And are you drawn to this kind of cerebral horror?

Milo Ventimiglia: I think anyone that says they don’t have a dark side is lying to themselves. But I do know that I try to keep my dark side in check. Live in a balance.understand that I have the best of intentions but at times the worst of me will come out. At least I know I won’t intentionally rip a guy in half in a fit of rage though. That’s a comforting thought.

Fangoria: Is there a reason why men are getting their heads ripped off in this series so far? Looks medieval and on purpose.

Milo Ventimiglia: I think when Rick first came with the idea, it was already pretty violent, then we just started sitting around a s a group thinking up how many body parts could be used as clubs if torn free and how you would splinter a persons head if you had the strength to rip them apart barehanded.

Fangoria: Is this comic book going to become either a television series or feature film?

Milo Ventimiglia: I have no idea looking that far.

Fangoria: We’re starting to see you in more films now. Do you want to eventually stay in film, or balance it out with television?

Milo Ventimiglia: I think if I can get what I want it would be to balance tv with film, with producing and directing, comic books and the design work I’ve been building with the DSC.

Fangoria: You were recently in a horror/thriller movie called Pathology, which I find very underrated as a horror film. It was smart, sexy, and intriguing with some great acting by Michael Weston (TV’s House), Lauren Lee Smith (Trick R Treat) and yourself. Are you a proud papa of this one? And why do you think it missed the boat with theater audiences?

Milo Ventimiglia: I am a proud papa of this one. I was a huge fan of Neveldine and Taylor, the maniacs that did Crank and Crank: High Voltage, so getting to work with them and build a relationship was a treat. And Michael Weston is such a powerhouse. The nicest guy in the world who descended into the sickest of fucks for the role. I have a huge amount of respect for that man. And the cast as well. A hard working talented group of players.

Fangoria: You’ve done a couple horror films actually, though not the greatest to be honest, with Stay Alive (Loomis) and Cursed (The memorable “in the closet” gay character, Bo). How was it working on those films and is this a genre you want to continue working in?

Milo Ventimiglia: On Stay Alive, I had auditioned for Hutch, which the great Jon Foster ended up getting, and then was presented with Loomis, the guy that gets off’d in the first 6 minutes. I thought that was just the right amount of screen time. Well worth it. And Cursed, I was a fan of Wes Craven and just wanted to work with him. I still get compliments on being the comic relief for the film, though I played it dead serious.

Fangoria: Serious or not, Bo was pretty funny. What are some of your favorite horror flicks? And what do you think about all these horror remakes of late?

Milo Ventimiglia: My father would sit me down as a kid and we’d watch the Boris Karloff Wolfman and Frankenstein, and Bela Lagosi Dracula. Those were my favorite. A Nightmare on Elm Street scared the shit out of me and I got in trouble for standing in the hallway and peeping while my parents watched An American Werewolf in London. I honestly don’t have a say, one way or another on the current remakes. If their good, their good. I think there are characters that are sacred, but if there is still a story to tell, why not.

Fangoria: You’re also in the upcoming film Gamer, reteaming with those crazy Crank boys, Neveldine and Taylor. How was it working with my favorite directors right now? And how did you get your character name anyway?

Milo Ventimiglia: I had finished Pathology and Neveldine handed me 2 scripts, one being GAMER. And he said “you’re playing Rick Rape”. And I said “ok, when do we shoot”. Then he said “in December and January” and I said “ok, where do we shoot”, and he said “New Mexico”, and I said “ok”. That’s about it. He told me I was playing Rick Rape and that was that.

Fangoria: Looking forward to that one. Any other projects in the works you want to pimp out here? Any conventions we can find you at this year?

Milo Ventimiglia: Aside from Gamer, I have Armored coming out in December (armored truck robbery flick with Matt Dillon, Lawrence Fishburn and Jean Reno) and little indy called Orded of Chaos with Rhys Coiro.

Fangoria: Quick. Who would win in a fight? Peter Petrelli or Jason Voorhees?

Milo Ventimiglia: If Peter Petrelli would brush the hair out of his eyes, quit whining and dry off his pussy, I think he could kick Jason’s ass. But Jason comes back and you never quite know how. Maybe it would be the other way around regardless.

Fangoria: Looking forward to more from you Milo, the new season of Heroes, and hopefully Peter can save the world from more useless reality television.

Milo Ventimiglia: I hope so too man. I hope so too.
